Sustainability at the Heart of Violet Flamingo

Since studying fashion at university, I’ve never wanted to be part of an industry that churns out products for the sake of it. Even back in 2005 — before fast fashion had really taken off — I was aware of the damage mass production could cause. After graduating, I worked for an independent British brand based in a micro-factory in West Yorkshire, where everything was made in-house. That experience shaped my philosophy and confirmed that there was another way to work — one rooted in purpose, not profit. And so, Violet Flamingo was born.

From the beginning, Violet Flamingo has focused on thoughtful creation — designing and handcrafting garments and accessories that are unique, made-to-order, and built to last. Waste isn’t part of the process. Roll ends of fabric become one-of-a-kind accessories or are used to customise pre-loved pieces for our Depop shop. Scraps are reused, donated to schools and crafters, or creatively repurposed. Sustainability isn’t a buzzword here — it’s embedded in everything we do.

I'm always thinking about the impact I have — not just as a designer, but as a person. Last week, I completed a carbon literacy course to explore ways to make the brand — and my own life — more conscious and climate-aware. The facts I learned weren’t necessarily surprising, but they were stark. If we continue on our current path, the future is bleak — and that’s not an exaggeration.

Like many, I’ve sometimes wondered, What’s the point? Can one person really make a difference? But here’s what I’ve come to believe: every action matters. However small, however quiet — it counts. The course opened my eyes to changes I hadn’t even considered, many of which are surprisingly achievable. I’ll be taking time to process it all and start applying what I’ve learned, both within Violet Flamingo and in my day-to-day life. We don't need to aim for perfection, small changes matter.

At Violet Flamingo, I’m proud to be part of a movement that values creativity, individuality, and responsibility. The world doesn’t need more clothes — it needs better ones. And that’s exactly what we’re here to create.

Big love, Lindsey x
